Canadian School Administrators' Statistical Reasoning about Probability, Effect, and Representativeness

چکیده
How do Canadian school leaders interpret data to inform their decisions? they reason with probability concepts? These are the questions we investigating in first year of this longitudinal bilingual project conducted Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. Our theoretical framework is inspired by semiotic perspective Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) which suggests that interpretation a triadic process integrated social context puts relation sign, an object, interpretant. To end, two individual interviews asked 10 English-speaking 9 French-speaking some about presented tabular form (mock on class level student performance health data), line graph (PISA 2018 report reading scores from 2009 2018) box plots different countries). preliminary results reveal principal’s abductively when it comes interpreting statistics want know or story behind numbers before making any decisions. Also, prefer collaboratively colleagues feel more comfortable grouped tables graphs. They considered themselves "data-driven" but not statisticians use verbal terms rather than ratios percentages (e.g., high probability, likelihood, odds) express probabilistic ideas. In next years, will study how professional experiences influence conceptions causality sampling representativeness.

REASONING ABOUT KNOWLEDGE AND PROBABILITY: Preliminary Report
A b s t r a c t : We provide a model for reasoning about knowledge anti probability together. We a.llow explicit mention of probabilities in formulas, so that our language has formulas tha.t essentia.lly say "a.ccording to agent i, formula. (p holds with probability a.t least o~." The language is powerfid enough to allow reasoning a~bout higher-order probabilities, as well as allowing explicit ...
متن کاملWhat Is Known about the Careers of School Administrators
The recently passed No Child Left Behind legislation reflects the increasing visibility and importance of school administration in the larger education reform effort. But just when the role of school administrators is being emphasized, policymakers and the public are becoming increasingly concerned that there is or soon will be a shortage of qualified individuals to fill formal school and distr...
متن کاملA Logic for Reasoning about Qualitative Probability
We offer extended completeness theorem for probabilistic logic that combines higher-order probabilities (nesting of probability operators) and the qualitative probability operator.
متن کاملReasoning Constructively about Probability and Programming with Chance
Probability and statistics are the deductive and inductive theories, respectively, of chance and uncertainty. However, they typically do not have a role in traditional logic and theorem proving. This is unfortunate, because chance is an important concept in computer science. The interaction between computer science and uncertainty typically takes three forms. First, algorithms may make random d...
متن کاملSubjective Probability: A Judgment of Representativeness
This paper explores a heuristic-representativeness-according to which the subjective probability of an event, or a sample, is determined by the degree to which it: (i) is similar in essential characteristics to its parent population; and (ii) reflects the salient features of the process by which it is generated. This heuristic is explicated in a series of empirical examples demonstrating predic...
